Rush Information for Fall 2010

At the beginning of each semester, Alpha Kappa Psi holds rush events to recruit new members. These rush events include both social and professional aspects that allow you to better understand what the fraternity stands for. Rush also provides us with opportunities to get to know our prospective members.

You know that the Marshall School of Business is one of the top ranked undergraduate schools of business in the nation. You know that the Marshall faculty is the brightest in the nation. You know that the USC alumni network is powerful and extensive.

But did you know that there are over 3,500 undergraduate students enrolled in Marshall? Or that these three years of recruiting are projected to be the toughest in the last 50? Or that 90% of hiring is due to networking? And, did you know that most of those hired have activities outside of the classroom?

We invite you to come see the most successful student organization on campus.

We invite you to come see a powerful brotherhood focused on developing principled leaders for a brighter future.

We invite you to come see an organization supported by devoted alumni in diverse fields committed to the success of their members.

We invite you to come see the network.

The Alpha Kappa Psi house is located on 729 W. 28th Street.

What is rush?

Alpha Kappa Psi holds rush once every semester. It is a week that includes both social and professional events carefully structured to show you what our fraternity stands for. You will have the opportunity to interact with other rushees, current student members, and alumni members of Alpha Kappa Psi. Rush also provides us with opportunities to get to know you on a personal level. The ultimate goal of rush is the recruitment of new members into our fraternity.

At the end of rush week, the active chapter will decide whether or not to extend a bid to you. A bid is a formal invitation for you to pledge Alpha Kappa Psi. If you are given a bid and choose to accept it, you will be placed into a pledge program with every other rushee that also chose to accept his or her bid. You must successfully complete this pledge program in order to be initiated as a member of Alpha Kappa Psi.

Why Rush AKPsi?

Alpha Kappa Psi is America's oldest and largest business fraternity. With over 300 college chapters and an enormous number of successful alumni, joining Alpha Kappa Psi means joining an enormous, unified network of elite professionals who are together committed to achieving success in both their professional and personal lives.

Well aware that many essential business skills are not taught in the classroom, Alpha Kappa Psi seeks to fill those knowledge gaps and to provide real life experiences to develop the leaders of a better future. Since 1904, the fraternity has helped shape the lives and careers for thousands and thousands of its members, including Ronald Reagan, J. Willard Marriott, and James Cash Penney.

However, Alpha Kappa Psi is not limited to only those who want to work in business. The active chapter here at USC recognizes and values passion and excellence in all fields of study, which is reflected in the diverse array of talent in the active chapter. The Alpha Zeta chapter at USC has created professionals and leaders in numerous disparate student organizations here on campus such as the Association of Integrated Marketing (AIM), the Fashion Club, and the Asian American Business Association (AABA), among many others. Along with aspiring investment bankers and accountants you will find talented musicians, dancers, writers, and artists. Pledging develops critical leadership skills that are valuable in any field of study. Student members of the Alpha Zeta chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi have used those leadership skills to become the ambassadors of our fraternity in their individual fields of knowledge.

Furthermore, Alpha Kappa Psi provides invaluable opportunities to meet with professionals in these various fields of knowledge. This will provide you with opportunities to observe, learn, and gain mentorship experience which ultimately empowers you to advance boldly into a promising future after college. Most importantly, the bonds you will develop within the brotherhood will hold through times of hardship and will last a lifetime.

With Alpha Kappa Psi, you're in good company.

How can I get a bid?

There is no single characteristic we look for in deciding whether or not to extend bids to rushees. However, you can increase your chances of getting a bid by attending as many rush events as possible and making positive impressions on student members through your enthusiasm and interest in Alpha Kappa Psi. In addition, it is important to be well prepared for your interview at the end of rush week. You should treat this interview as though it were any other interview for a job by making sure to dress professionally, by preparing for expected questions ahead of time, and by arriving promptly at your designated interview time. We are looking for individuals who are determined, motivated, and have the potential to represent the best of Alpha Kappa Psi's core values of brotherhood, integrity, knowledge, unity, and service.

What if I don't get a bid?

Do not be discouraged if you do not get a bid the first time you rush! Some of the fraternity's most valued members did not succeed in getting a bid the first time they rushed. We strongly encourage you to rush again next semester, making sure that the student members see your potential and dedication the next time around. Rushing again takes courage and shows your enthusiasm, traits which are highly valued by the student members of the active chapter.

Who can join?

Anybody currently in their undergraduate studies, with at least a year before they graduate. Men and women of all majors are welcome.

However, those who are already members of a professional fraternity are not eligible to join Alpha Kappa Psi. Members of social fraternities are still welcome.
